Postmodern Jukebox

I just found this great interruption by Postmodern Jukebox of a song by Toto called ” Africa ” that I am excited to share.

To be honest I was over the original version of ‘ Africa ‘ about a week after it was released in 1981 because I heard it playing over the sound system NON STOP at a Mall I was working at.

( Remember Malls anyone? )

and I’ve pretty much hated it ever since.

Just as an FYI the original video for this was a ‘hit’ on MTV and music critics la la loved everything about this song.

Me not so much.

Actually I hated the video too.

So what tickled my fancy and got me into the song after a lifetime of ” no, ugh turn it off ” which is a reaction I have to most songs by the Beatles too -was not only the arrangement ( which has a sense of movement and adventure), but the staging for the song- which I’ll let you see without comment.

So go ahead- give it a whirl, this is a good one:

Africa

David Paich and Jeff Porcaro

I hear the drums echoing tonight
But she hears only whispers of some quiet conversation
She’s coming in, 12:30 flight
The moonlit wings reflect the stars that guide me towards salvation
I stopped an old man along the way
Hoping to find some old forgotten words or ancient melodies
He turned to me as if to say
“Hurry boy, it’s waiting there for you”

It’s gonna take a lot to drag me away from you
There’s nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I bless the rains down in Africa
Gonna take some time to do the things we never had (ooh, ooh)

The wild dogs cry out in the night
As they grow restless, longing for some solitary company
I know that I must do what’s right
As sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti
I seek to cure what’s deep inside, frightened of this thing that I’ve become

It’s gonna take a lot to drag me away from you
There’s nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I bless the rains down in Africa
Gonna take some time to do the things we never had (ooh, ooh)

Hurry boy, she’s waiting there for you

It’s gonna take a lot to drag me away from you
There’s nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I bless the rains down in Africa
I bless the rains down in Africa
(I bless the rain)
I bless the rains down in Africa
I bless the rains down in Africa
I bless the rains down in Africa
(Gonna take the time)
Gonna take some time to do the things we never had (ooh, ooh)

The Wolf

For Mindlovemisery’s Menagerie Music Challenge prompt, we were given the Bill Withers song, “Just the Two of Us.” and the suggestion to let this song and castles and rainbows and flowers be our inspiration.

It would be easy to find a love song about two people ‘chasing rainbows in the sky’ because I know them a bunch of them and I’m crazy about them.

But sometimes inspiration takes on a life of it’s own.

I was inspired to go waaaayyy outside the box and I chose ” Little Red Riding Hood ” and in particular a I chose Amanda Seyfried version because at the heart of it, this is a song about someone who is passionately in love with a person that they can never show their heart to and in this version you can hear it clear as a dark path on a moonlit night.

Of course, as the Wolf and the object of the Wolf’s desire are strolling through the dark and dangerous woods they never actually touch but the intimacy, the passion, the longing is there in every single word.

I find that heartbreakingly romantic.

I also wanted to include the original version by Sam The Sham so you can hear the different spin on passion- in the original version you can hear this a tease, it’s flirting, it’s two people having a little fun out there in the woods.

It isn’t any less passionate though.

So I hope you enjoy my post today and I hope you enjoy the song I’ve selected.

Tiny Bubbles

Sometimes I struggle just a little bit with Jim Adam’s Song Lyric Sunday prompt.

Not because I can’t come up with a favorite song, but that I have so many to chose from!

The prompts this Sunday are Big, Large, Little, Small, Tall and Tiny and this time I got it in one:

I chose tiny- As in Tiny Bubbles by Don Ho.

When I was a little kid my family were bonkers for Don Ho and all of us kids loved to sing this song.

So please enjoy, this is a fun one.

Tiny BubblesDon Hồ

Tiny bubbles (tiny bubbles)
In the wine (in the wine)
Make me happy (make me happy)
Make me feel fine (make me feel fine)

Tiny bubbles (tiny bubbles)
Make me warm all over
With a feeling that I’m gonna
Love you till the end of time

So here’s to the golden moon
And here’s to the silver sea
And mostly here’s a toast
To you and me

So here’s to the ginger lei
I give to you today
And here’s a kiss
That will not fade away
