Ava and Jemma

RDP Friday: AFTERLIFE

My three year old  granddaughter has a friend

named Ava.

She told me all about her

one morning when I was making my bed.

Ava is a little older then her, she goes to school –

not pre-school, not daycare

but a real school Jemma said proudly.

My Granddaughter told me that

Ava goes to school everyday

but she doesn’t understand why her friends aren’t there

or where her Teacher is

and why the classroom is dark and the lights are never on.

I asked my Granddaughter

would Ava like to go to school with us sometime?

My Granddaughter said, ” wait  ” and she ran into the hall

outside of my bedroom and I heard her talking.

” Ava doesn’t want to go to play school. She wants to go to her school. But nobody is

there  and none of the lights are on.”

” Would Ava like to go outside with us and play in your

Fort instead? ” I asked.

My Granddaughter peeked around the door and I heard her talking

and when she turned around she was beaming.

“Ava said okay! Ava is going to play with us today and not go to school!”

I looked into the empty hallway outside of my bedroom.

The Sun was shining through the French windows, the air was a little

cool.

I told my Granddaughter. ” I’m sorry.  I can’t see Ava. Is she still here? ”

Jemma nodded and she jumped up on my bed and said  ” Don’t feel bad Lola, Ava said

she can see you.”

This story is 100%. All I changed was the kind of window the sun was coming through. I like French windows.

The Rats In The Wall

Daily Writing Prompt: No Turning Back

One year

the rats chewed through my bathroom wall and that night

they were racing up and down my hallway

for the heck of it I suppose.

They got into the cat food in the pantry, they chewed through the cord on my tv set.

But I didn’t care. I didn’t freak out.  It’s not like I could kill them with my bare hands.

I just sat there in the dark and watched them and when they were done

they actually went back out the way they came in.

My cat followed them to the hole in the bathroom wall

and I heard one of the rats hiss at him.

I went out, right there and then and bought poison

and set it out for my nighttime visitors.

It was three in the morning when I got home with the poison  from the all night market,

three in the morning, I am told is the hour that demons are the most active.

You know.

Those rats would probably agree with that.
