For The Record

When I am out and about in the world or walking my dog or tossing back a snack and something inspires me, I’ll snap a picture of it or pull out my pen and my ever present scrap of paper and jot down a few lines or a word or two and write about it as soon as I can- and by that I mean right away.

That’s not to say there isn’t a world of material on line just waiting for one to go  Belzoni  and dig until you hit that great find that will inspire a poem or story or an article.

So here is a list of resources that I tap when I’m working on my writing:

Google Arts and Culture

Our Random  View

Instagram

I’ve also made better use of my ‘category’ option here on my blog. It’s made it easier access my own material as well as posting links on my Facebook page. For example, I can direct readers to my Holiday Posts or Poems.

In the end though, it always comes back to the pen and paper for me, but playing on the internet is an adventure of sorts and I do love a good adventure now and then, don’t you?

Over the last few years I got ‘serious’ about my photography.

By that I mean  I paid more attention to – as my screenwriting instructor taught- Space, Light and Texture.  That actually applied to writing but it works for pictures too.

I even started to haunt Art Galleries and found discovered Franz Von Stuck and Hammershoi  and on a few occasions I even watched art students working on their craft.

So what did I do with the results of my hard work?

Why, I stuck them on my Facebook page where they were buried under posts I didn’t write and pictures of talking cats and video of puppies learning to howl like Wolves and comics- I love the comics:

A few weeks ago I re-discovered Instagram.

The only rule I have there is, the pictures I post are actually pictures that I took.

They may not be perfect, they may not make a lot of sense but my Instagram pictures are snapshots of my real life .

So there are pictures of my dog, of places I visit and images of things that caught my eye.

When I started to take my writing seriously I learned that if you have to explain your stories you probably should go back and do a little editing because a story should be able to explain itself.

My Instagram pictures are the same- they tell their own story and they don’t need me to explain them in great detail.

I’d like my Instagram account to be a real photo album with real stories to tell- that is my goal. Let’s see how it goes, shall we?

C O D

I used to love to send out Christmas cards- I sent them to my family, some of my friends it was fun.

I liked to pick out cards that sort of showed where I was at- was I feeling Victorian and old fashioned that year? Was I thinking about Snow? Was I sending simple basic cards because I had spent time trying to simplify my life ( oh, ha, ha, ha that is always good for about five minutes here and there over the year)

Then it got complicated.

I started to get E-Cards and then I got the animated cards and then I got things on my FB Wall that danced and sang and rolled their eyes around and snowed all over the place.

I managed to learn some ’emoji” but I hated the e-cards because IF I could get them to work they were full of advertisements- which is like getting junk mail that lives forever and I don’t know about you but I hate junk mail.

Especially Zombie Junk mail.

As a rule, I hate Zombies in ALL of their forms- nasty things.

I dirgress- my point is  you can’t hang e-cards up or put them on tables or next to trays of cookies or on your mantelpiece.

It is very sad.

Holiday Cards have passed out of style I guess.

I still send a few cards out- but I wonder if anyone really cares about them anymore or if after they open them they just stand there with it in their hand and wonder what to do with it because who gets mail with stamps on them anymore?

Christmas is supposed to be about wishes and hopes and dreams and here is one of mine:

I hope that one day getting Christmas cards is part of the holiday fun again- and that they are attached to boxes of cookies and homemade candy.

Something’s can’t be sent as an attachment through email.

And in my opinion they shouldn’t be because where is the fun in that?
