It’s A Skill, I Think

Daily writing prompt: What’s a secret skill or ability you have or wish you had?

It’s not a secret

that I can spend all day at a cemetery

listening to the stories that the dead have to tell.

Every poem, every song, every wish that they ever had

is carved in marble, etched in stone

trapped in the leaves of the  weeds and trees

that wrap their roots around their bones

all you have to do is sit down with them

quiet yourself

and listen.

Mad In March

From Albert Camus:

“The true horror of existence is not the fear of death, but the fear of life. It is the fear of waking up each day to face the same struggles, the same disappointments, the same pain. It is the fear that nothing will ever change, that you are trapped in a cycle of suffering that you cannot escape. And in that fear, there is a desperation, a longing for something, anything, to break the monotony, to bring meaning to the endless repetition of days.”

— Albert Camus, The Fall

The Dance

The Hanging Tree situated on a mound above Finlarig Castle, Killin, Scotland . Used for those not of noble birth.

In all of the pictures I’ve seen of public hangings, the sun is always shining.

Most of the people  in the crowd are smiling,

their faces burning  bright and hot with excitement and expectation,

are tilted up towards the gallows.

Upon the stage, the Soloist  waits for their cue

and when it finally  comes

at  last

under a cloudless and blue sky

they begin their dance,

tapping their toes  to music that nobody else can hear.
