Killer Bunnies and a Witch

RDP Wednesday BELL

William Porter Attempts to Burn the Witch (Illus. 1894)

In the Bell Witch lore, the Bell Witch haunting began sometime in 1817 when John Bell witnessed the apparition of a strange creature resembling a dog with the head of a rabbit on his property.

The description of Bell’s apparition  reminded me of artwork found in  medieval bibles that were called illuminated manuscripts and featured in the countless tapestries and prints I have run across of the years  and stories I have seen  showing medieval bunnies going bad:

Picture it- some of this  artwork were created in t in dark and spooky monasteries by monks who lived and breathed stories about the end of the world, demons and the Devil  and a mean God who would smite you at the drop of a hat.

Maybe some of those other Monks were probably just into satire hence the killer bunnies. I still haven’t found any story that convinces me WHY bunnies were portrayed as killers, but they were.

My point is, some of the artwork is just bizarre- this wasn’t the post I was planning on writing today, but the Bell Witch took me there.

There is this little part of me

that hides in my dreams, finds it’s way into the things I write, says things out loud

that the rest of me doesn’t have the courage to speak out loud

, even if I am the only person in the room.

That little part of me that oozes and threads around inside of me like fog rolling up from the sea to the shore

lives in a haunted house at the very core of my soul.

I Hope.
