Holiday Chocolates, A Ghost and a Mirror

Photo A.M Moscoso

Last month I learned this great ghost story- it involved a chocolate shop, a mirror and a ghost with missing fingers.

The night I learned the story, it was chilly and it was just starting to rain and better yet the shop was closed at the time, so we were all lined up at the window peering into the darkness  towards the back of the shop where the mirror is.

I had my face right up against the glass- of course- and I was thinking to myself:

” I can’t wait to come back in the morning and buy a bunch of chocolates to take home with me.”

Here’s the funny party- I don’t like chocolate. Not even a little. I like milk chocolate and white chocolate ( yes, yes, yes, I KNOW white chocolate is not ‘real’ chocolate ) but as far as the traditional, dark, rich chocolate.

Ugh- I am not a fan.

But I had a plan.

A delicious one.

So the next day I went back and bought a big box of chocolates- and they weren’t little bite sized candies- they were generous sized pieces of chocolate with delicious creamy fillings. I went vampire on a few and drained the filling out, so I can vouch for the heaven that was hiding there in the darkness.

I had my family over for Thanksgiving- and just before pie I pulled out a candy dish stacked with the chocolates

Just after the unwrapping and the moment my family began to sink their teeth into the chocolates I told them the story about the Haunted Candy Store and the ghost with the missing fingers.

They looked at the candy, they looked at me and back at the candy again.

They could have rolled their eyes around and thanked me for ruining the moment- but my family loves a good ghost story and I have been known for bringing up unsavory topics involving graveyards and missing body parts at dinners before so for the most part my story about buying candy from a haunted candy store wasn’t exactly earth shattering.

So.

They chewed, they were in heaven, I was in heaven.

We are all in heaven but for different reasons, as you can guess.

At the end of the evening though- when I was encouraging people to take some of the candy home ( I kid you not- those are BIG pieces of candy. Two people can share one piece and call it good ) I noticed some of us were calling the chocolates ” Ghost Candy.”

Next time I go back to Rogers I might snap a picture of the mirror- and maybe if I’m lucky, there will be a little handprint on it.

Maybe next time I’ll  ask if they have Lady Fingers.

Deck The Halls With Skulls and Wait- What?

When I was in Victoria in November, I went to the Royal BC Museum and there in one of the exhibits was the greatest thing ever- it was a skull.

The exhibit was of a blacksmith’s shop- its dark, you can hear someone striking an anvil and you can hear horses moving around to. It’s my favorite exhibit because unless you do a little exploring it’s easy to miss.

I was hoping that the Christmas Decorations would be up- and there were some – and they may have had the town decorated for Halloween and someone forgot the skull was there I suppose or maybe they didn’t miss it.

Maybe it was on purpose.

If you’re me, then seeing something like a skull in a dark exhibit hiding away in a corner WILL be the highlight of your Day At The Museum Trip- even if it is the start of the Christmas Season and you were actually looking forward to seeing one of your favorite exhibits decorated for Christmas ( see the fully decorated exhibit on the Royal BC Museum HERE )

Still, I have a feeling that no matter what I do, or what I hang and pin that nothing will be as  wonderful- as delicious and festive as that skull waiting in the dark for the Christmas decorations to go up.

C O D

I used to love to send out Christmas cards- I sent them to my family, some of my friends it was fun.

I liked to pick out cards that sort of showed where I was at- was I feeling Victorian and old fashioned that year? Was I thinking about Snow? Was I sending simple basic cards because I had spent time trying to simplify my life ( oh, ha, ha, ha that is always good for about five minutes here and there over the year)

Then it got complicated.

I started to get E-Cards and then I got the animated cards and then I got things on my FB Wall that danced and sang and rolled their eyes around and snowed all over the place.

I managed to learn some ’emoji” but I hated the e-cards because IF I could get them to work they were full of advertisements- which is like getting junk mail that lives forever and I don’t know about you but I hate junk mail.

Especially Zombie Junk mail.

As a rule, I hate Zombies in ALL of their forms- nasty things.

I dirgress- my point is  you can’t hang e-cards up or put them on tables or next to trays of cookies or on your mantelpiece.

It is very sad.

Holiday Cards have passed out of style I guess.

I still send a few cards out- but I wonder if anyone really cares about them anymore or if after they open them they just stand there with it in their hand and wonder what to do with it because who gets mail with stamps on them anymore?

Christmas is supposed to be about wishes and hopes and dreams and here is one of mine:

I hope that one day getting Christmas cards is part of the holiday fun again- and that they are attached to boxes of cookies and homemade candy.

Something’s can’t be sent as an attachment through email.

And in my opinion they shouldn’t be because where is the fun in that?
