Hot As That

On June 28th it was 108 degrees outside.

I’ve been to Vegas, Texas, so sure I know what heat feels like. But it’s easy to deal with when you’re in a place where triple digits are a way of life and there’s AC everywhere you go.

I live in Washington State, just outside of Seattle and it never, ever gets this hot.

So my apartment, all but for one room was over 100 degrees and I couldn’t get my hands on an AC unit.

I lived in one room and my day was spent keeping that room and my dog cool. There was no way I could take him outside so we toughed it out and yesterday it cooled down into the 80’s and I spent the day ventilating my apartment because that hot air wasn’t going to go anyway on it’s own.

I also checked to see if my brand spanking new Air conditioner came in early. No cigar. It will be here in a few days. Lucky me.

So during that time, when the walls in my living room were hot to the touch and all of the metal appliances in my kitchen were giving off heat I kept my dog cooled off and put my headphones listened to some music checked out, otherwise I was going to get angry about my situation and that wasn’t going to be helpful.

My go to song for those historic days? The song that I will think of when we talk about the historic temperatures in Washington state and what those of us without AC did to get through it.

Here it is:

She says hello from Istanbul,
She made some dough in Istanbul,
There ain’t no snow in Istanbul,
And everybody’s having fun.
The boys are cool in Istanbul,
There’s lots of wool in Istanbul,
I wish I was in Istanbul,
With people grooving in the sun.
I wanna see you bellydance!

I Have Missed You Darling October

Word of the Day Challenge: Thirst

Covid Restrictions in Washington State are going to be lifted for  fully vaccinated individuals and our state Reopens on June 30th  so this is what I’ve missed during the lock down and what I look forward to in June.

Henri Matisse – The Green Pumpkin, c. 1916

Of all the things I’ve missed

since the Covid-19 lockdown began

I have missed October the most.

I  have missed being afraid for fun

I  have missed haunting cemeteries for sport

I have missed saying ‘boo’ and making people laugh

The lack of October has made me

anxious, tired and sad

I am hungry, I am thirsty for the darkness to return.

I have missed you Darling October

and I have missed  your children

Christmas and Halloween.

Snow clouds, thunder storms

falling leaves and icy garden paths

come home soon, I am waiting for your return.

For Song Lyric Sunday- I Can Make You A Man!

It’s Song Lyric Sunday and we are out here posting songs about fixing and making things.

My mind first went to the Bob The Builder song… it goes, ” Can we fix it?  Yes we can!” and then I had a brain wave and thought another song about making things. So here is my choice for today-

” I Can Make You a Man ” by Richard O’brien and performed by Tim Curry in the Rock Horror Picture show.

Enjoy- this is a fun one!

A weakling weighing ninety-eight pounds
Will get sand in his face when kicked to the ground.

And soon in the gym with a determined chin,
The sweat from his pores as he works for his cause…
Will make him glisten… and gleam
And with massage, and just a little bit of steam
He’ll be pink and quite clean
He’ll be a strong man. Oh honey…
But the wrong man.

He’ll eat nutritious high protein and swallow raw eggs.
Try to build up his shoulders, his chest, arms, and legs.
Such an effort if he only knew of my plan.
In just seven days, I can make you a man.

He’ll do press-ups, and chin-ups, do the snatch, clean and jerk.
He thinks dynamic tension must be hard work.
Such strenuous living I just don’t understand
When in just seven days, oh baby, I can make you a man.

and I couldn’t resist… Bob the Builder:

Jeremy Bentham’s Head Fell Off

Jeremy Bentham was an interesting guy who advocated for things like equal rights for women and the abolition of slavery.

Among the many other important things Jeremy Bentham accomplished I also learned that he had written into his Will that his body be preserved, stored in a cabinet and brought out for special board meetings.

Then one day his head, which was not preserved well…fell off. So they made a wax one and stuck his real head between his feet ( see picture above) .

Jeremy Bentham’s Head

I’m sorry to say I couldn’t have made this stuff up…

darn it.

Jeremy Bentham (26 February [O.S. 15 February 15] 1748) – June 6, 1832) was an English jurist, philosopher, and legal and social reformer. He was a political radical and a leading theorist in Anglo-American philosophy of law. He is best known as an early advocate of utilitarianism and fair treatment of animals who influenced the development of liberalism.
