Nan’s Sewing Room

Title: Study of a Woman Sewing
Creator: Robert Polhill Bevan, 1865–1925

My  Nan  used to tell me that when you got old, your bones creaked and groaned like the floors in an old house.

She said that you always felt cold when you got really old,and you could tell it was going to rain because your toes and fingers would tingle, ” remember that time you plugged in the tv and got that shock? ” she reminded me. “That’s what it feels like. ”

And then she said firmly through gritted teeth that when you got really, really old you died.

We had these conversations when she was sewing or crocheting in her sewing room.

My  Nan  used to crochete me a vest and a blanket  for my birthday every year.

Halloween was my favorite holiday, so in the little squares she created were spooky faces or sometimes pumpkins and trees or ghosts with little pearl button eyes.

One day, as she was busy making me another blanket for my bed, I asked her ” Nan, does anyone ever die when they’re not really, really old? ”

I was standing next to a shelf full of Halloween blankets that were never unfolded and laid on a bed  and vests of various sizes that  were never worn and she didn’t look up at me when she said,

” Yes. ” she said. ” Sometimes.”

It’s Fun That Is Funny

My hobby is exploring cemeteries and graveyards.

If you’re not in the know, cemeteries are big theme parks for the dead and graveyards are smaller and attached to churches.

I live in Washington state and our graveyards and cemeteries are relatively ‘young’ so the ‘artwork’ is  around the same age and even though they are great places to visit you don’t see a lot of variety as it were.

That’s why when I got to Wisconsin to visit my son and his family we go cemetery exploring together because then I can see headstones and statues that I only see pictures of in books.

Now I am having even more fun because my Granddaughter Jemma is old enough to go along:

When Jemma first went with me she thought monsters were sleeping in the graves so she was somewhat cautious-

But she is not like that anymore because Wednesday Addams came along, but the truth is she’s my Granddaughter so eventually she was going to start feeling the vibe:

I’ll be hitting the grounds in a few weeks when I go to Wisconsin to visit my Granddaughters ( the newest addition to our family was born in September so she will probably sit out Cemetery day this year ) and I am hoping to get some great pictures and stories to share.

Cemeteries are literally packed with stories and I can’t wait to learn a few more new ones.

TheMagical Artist

I love to watch an artist paint or sketch.

A line here, a swipe there a flick of the wrist and like magic an image appears.

It’s magical it really is magical.

I wish that I could carve pumpkins with that same magical  ease.

A cut there, a little slice there a flick of the wrist there and there and like magic a face appears on my pumpkin- maybe it will be a screaming face, a laughing face a face with too many eyes or not enough teeth.

I think about carving pumpkins a lot during Halloween and when it isn’t anywhere near Halloween I still think about carving pumpkins-

among other things.
