The Cloudless Sky

RDP Wednesday: Downpour

When I was a little girl, my Mom found me outside in our front yard.

I was looking up into a blue cloudless sky and I was laughing.

” What are you looking at?” my Mom asked me.

” The sky is raining ghosts. ” I told her.

My Mother said that she didn’t see any ghosts and I told her,

” That’s ok.” I reassured my Mom “They can see you.”

Today WP Daily Prompt asks: What do you enjoy the most about writing?

My parent’s families hail from the  Philippines ( mother ) and my Dad’s family were from England and Scotland.

They practiced different religions, their politics were not the same, but do you know what they did have in common?

Storytelling.

If you could tell a good story,  you had the floor at our family gatherings- and given that our family gatherings were always very, very well attended ( that’s my fancy way of saying there were a lot of us ) having the floor in a huge gathering made you a rock star.

It didn’t matter how old you were, it didn’t matter what your story was about ( though ghost stories were prized above all the other stories ) my family would sit there and give you their undivided attention. Some of us were a little more skilled at storytelling, but that in itself didn’t matter. They just wanted a story.

When I started to win prizes for writing in school, my Mom saved everything I wrote and sent xerox copies in her Christmas cards and in case you’re wondering they did get read because I used to get postcards and notes from my relatives saying that they really loved what I had written.

So now my family has changed- me and  some of my cousins are grandparents – our parents are elderly there aren’t as many of us as there used to be.

I wish I could say that I sit down with my Granddaughter and that I am teaching her to tell a story the way both of my Grandfathers did with me- but she lives in the mid-west and I live on the west coast and  in that respect I have failed her.

What I do is write on my blog- I tell stories and decorate it with  pictures and music that in the hopes that when she is older she will find it and maybe learn a thing or two. Right now she understands that I write scary stories and that I write about when I was a little girl and I hope she gets inspiration from that and it takes her imagination on a wild ride.
