When I was a kid, one of my family members asked me what my ‘goals’ for the New Years were.
I told him and he looked at me and smirked and said, ” so if I ask you at the end of next year if you made your goals you will say you have?”
I was just a kid but smart enough to know he probably didn’t grill anyone else like this over their New Years Resolutions so I said. ” Sure.”
He said, ” Bull.”
I was eight or nine at the time.
I learned at a young age that if I had a goal I was serious about, it was better to keep it to myself and when I made my goal it would look like magic- like something cool had dropped out of the sky. Of course I was now in the position of having to say I had lucked out and hadn’t really worked for what I had accomplished.
I thought it was a fair trade off because not letting someone into my head or my life just so that they could judge me wasn’t such a bad thing.
