The Peacock Family and Their Neighbors

I’ve been taking pictures at cemeteries for a few years now and I feature them here on my blog.

This year’s collection was different- these pictures have oomph and I am excited to share them with you.

Meet the Peacock Family:  I loved their name and call it a moment of inspiration or a haunting- but as soon as I saw the Peacock’s tombstones I just knew there’s a story here just waiting to be told.

J.H. Peacock and Caroline Peacock’s headstones were in the best shape, I’m sorry to say the other Peacock’s markers were harder to read.  I included them in a group portrait below:

The Family Tree- this was the second tombstone I saw like this one  while I was visiting Wisconsin- the other was in Fox Lake. I captured different angles so that you could see the beautiful work that went into creating this lovely tombstone.

Here is some information I found  about “Tree Stones “.

Tree-stump tombstones like these can be found in graveyards across the country ( USA). They tend to surprise people who come across them, since they’re not quite what we expect to see at the head of a grave. They date mostly to 1880s to 1920s, when funerary art in the United States was moving away from the grand mausoleums and obelisks found elsewhere in Green-Wood. The tree-stump stones were part of a movement to turn the focus of death back to life, and they’re a unique form connected with the secret societies of the time. “They qualify as folk art,” writes Susanne Ridlen, in her 1999 book Tree-Stump Tombstones.

As my Son and I were leaving Oakwood, we passed by this tombstone flanked by two trees glowing in  gold and red leaves and I thought of a Christmas Tree.

I know, it’s silly. After all, it’s almost Halloween.

Despite my holiday snafu, it was a beautiful sight:

I have more pictures to share and I will add them to my blog here through the winter. I don’t want to do a photo dump because all of my Graveyard pictures have a story to tell and I want to give them their moment to shine.

Inspired by RDP Thursday Prompt: OOMPH

Anything is Possible Now

WP Daily Prompt: What major historical events do you remember?

Dressed in his space suit, ‘Buzz’ Aldrin is seen on the surface of the moon, surrounded by footprints left by himself and mission commander Neil Armstrong

The very first historical event I remember was the Moon Landing- I was I almost five years old at the time.

I was pretty freaked out by the entire thing because for some reason I thought that Martians were going to attack us  now and I even had nightmares about it.

My nightmares about the Martian Invasion were so bad I started to sleep under my bed with a baseball bat and my plushie musical Snoopy.

My Dad wasn’t exactly helpful with my situation.

I asked him if we were going to get into trouble with the Martians for landing on the Moon and he said,

” I guess anything is possible now.”

You have sixty days to get yourself together before Santa shows up-

ho- ho-ho.

“Violent Night ” starring David Harbour is a Christmas movie- you could say it’s a Halloween movie too.

Either way.

It’s  second to  A Christmas Carol starring Alistair Simm as ” Scrooge ” in my list of favorite holiday movies.

Wish

Mischief Night, 1994 by Andrew Wyeth

On the night before Halloween-

If a Witch were standing outside my window- and she was dressed from head to toe in black, if she were holding a broom in one hand and sitting on her shoulder was a cat named Harley and she said she was there to grant me three wishes, what would I ask for?

Why. That’s Easy Peasy.

I’d ask her to fly away with her cat to my neighbor’s house down the street and I would wish that she would offer my remaining two wishes to her instead.

Then I would steal down the street, shrouded in the Witch’s shadow, to my Neighbor’s house and I would watch her gobble up those two remaining wishes without chewing on them- she would just swallow them whole.

Wishes taste like caramel- something about that burnt sugar is irresistible to the tongue and people devour them before they wrapper is even off.

Maybe a few hours later, maybe a month later I would watch those two poisoned wishes blossom and bloom- and as they did I would hear a voice at my shoulder say, ” Oh you are a wicked thing, you are a crafty little devil you. ”

And I would reply indeed I am I am a wicked little thing and a crafty   Devil to boot and all of us know that  Mischief Night isn’t just a date on the calander- it’s a way of life.
