Silent Muse

#100 DaysofHalloweenhappy-Autumn Must Do

Artist Unknown

Last Autumn I made an effort, but I didn’t quite pull off jumping into the season with the enthusiasm it deserves.

This year I want to hit the ” Ber ” months head first- so where do I start?

Do I bake more? Decorate more? Craft more? Read more?

Do I visit graveyards and cemeteries and  haunted houses?

There are only a few weeks left in August and I’m feeling the stress.

What do I do?

I’ve googled it, facbooked it, instagramed it and I’m not finding any ideas that scream

Halloween.

I think my Muse is holding out on me and I do believe the place to start is there. Well. Here goes nothing-

The Question

It was a straightforward question and it deserved a straight forward answer.

The elderly lady who was choosing a coffin from a catalog asked me, ‘ Are the pillows that come with these coffins soft? Or are they firm? Would you say they are comfortable? ”

I was a Funeral Director and my calling, on that day was to help this lady and her husband.

I looked at the model she had her finger on. and I looked at it. Then I looked at her.

” Those pillows are decorative. I would not call them comfortable. ”

” For that price, they should be. Well. I’ll bring his favorite from home. Is that okay? ”

I told her it was perfectly fine,

because it was.

I Am Curious

Abandoned Dust Bowl Home, about 1935–1940, Dorothea Lange

I am curious about

what happens to abandoned houses and all of their ghosts

when they are forgotten by the living.

Does the house listen for footsteps to make their way to their front door, does it wait for

someone to peer through their windows and desperately flip light switches to chase away not just the dark but the feeling

that something is watching them and they hope against hope that little bit of light will chase it back into the closets and up the attic stairs?

Do the ghosts

wait in the hopes  of hearing  someone ask, ” is anybody there? ”

Does

the house wonder where everyone has gone?

and if those ghosts and that abandoned house can’t haunt you or me

that must mean

it has to haunt itself

and that is enough to drive anybody

Insane.

I am curious about wandering around abandoned houses that the world has forgotten-

is it a good idea?

Is it really?

Pumpkin Empress-AI

Last weekend I spent my time catching up on my reading. Presently I’m reading a collection of short stories by Algernon Blackwood and I’m almost finished with one called  ” The Wendigo. ”

I’ve come to the part when the Wendigo passes over the sleeping hunters and they react to it’s smell, but they don’t wake up.  That really creeps me out and that’s where I stopped reading for the night.

This is what happened that night:

It’s been warm and I’ve had the fan on low in my bedroom to move the air around at night to freshen things up a bit.

I was fast asleep when this little puff of air sort of drifted across my face and rested on my cheek and just over my eye and I’ll bet you thought I was going to say I woke up screaming.

HA! I did not.

I woke up thinking to not make a sound- whatever I do- don’t make a sound.

After a few seconds I did. Of course I did.

Ask anyone living within a square mile of me.
