When Patriots Act

I Pledge Allegiance
Are you patriotic? What does being patriotic mean to you?

Am I Patriotic?

Well, sure.

I believe in the Superman Tag line… Truth, Justice And The American way.

I believe we should all be able to have a say and the chance to be heard and that your fellow American shouldn’t snap flags or placards so loud they drown you out.

I think that when our ” Founding Fathers” risked being executed  for treason they didn’t sit around smoking Pipes while leafing through THE HOLY BIBLE and  casually shooting the breeze in scholarly tones  about  what would make The United States a great place to live.

I think they were hoping they could pull this off and live to tell the tale.  I think they were scared. I’ll bet they wished they didn’t have to go where they felt they had to go.

So sure I am a Patriot.

I want my fellow Americans to be able to say what they have to say without being drowned out, I want them to be able to challenge the system and ideas without being told when they can do it and what they can say … and by the way… threatening people with arrest when they offend your political sensibilities is exactly why a bunch of people put themselves on boats and sailed to the other side of the world and risked their lives to begin with.

So in the that Spirit I am a Patriot because I say so.

I don’t need anybody’s blessing or instruction on how to be a Good American. I do my best everyday to be a good person, to be a credit to my family and community.

But I have to admit (mainly because I don’t want to end this on a rant but would rather end it on a laugh ) when I was old enough to Vote my Mom use to wait for me at the door with my ballot and she made sure I voted. When I was in a rush I would ask who to vote for and she would say, ” Ask you Dad who he is voting for and DO NOT  vote for the same people.”

So God Bless America and Let’s Play Ball.

All of us.

Just before I went to Vegas last month I made up my mind to the fact that unless I really buckled down I wasn’t really going to get back into my writing in any meaningful way.

There were things that had come up that seemed like I should pay attention to- like  the Presidential Elections- what a fucking monumental waste of time that has been.

My time would have been better spent watching Honey Boo Boo marathons on TLC. I mean, we all know Reality TV is not real but we are convinced Campaigns  are.

Campaigns are stories about the candidate and their vision for the Office they seek.  It’s not a lie exactly, but it is a story.

In this case I could have shot a better story out of my nose.

And then for my own special reasons I decided I needed to be polite and patient with people who drove me up the freaking wall, across the ceiling and straight into the ground.

So instead of worrying about why my blog was not being worked on, or my short story collection I wanted  everyone to be happy ( even if they were driving me insane) and if I had to suck rotten eggs to make that happen I would.

My family have always been my strongest supporters and telling them I hadn’t been doing much writing lately was like saying, ‘ I hate to say this, but when I was backing the car out of the driveway I ran over everyone’s dog and cats. I even ran over the fish in Esther’s pond. I don’t know how they all got there but they’re all smooshed.”

Well. I made good on it.

Not about killing my family member’s pets-When I got home I started to write again.

And lo and behold my older neglected blog picked up a bunch of new subrscribers and my stats were pretty healthy for a site I hadn’t worked on for two years.

So now I go to work, I work on notes during lunch. I read books on my break and on the bus to and from work. I come home walk the dog, eat dinner and I write.

My social life is in the toilet and I am so pale I actually started to wear a lot of makeup and long sleeves and jeans, In case you haven’t heard it was in the upper 90’s in Seattle and the State is on fire.

But I’m writing again, and I’m writing in areas I had never worked in before so I’m pretty excited about that.

So I’m pale, so all I do is work, read and write and sometimes I go out and do stuff.

But I think I’m much more careful with my time and how I spend it. I wish I had learned that years ago.

But I’m a writer again and I think that is all that matters.

The Pompeii Dog

When I was about 10 years old I got sent to the library as a punishment ( really my teacher used to do that, she’d send you to the library as a punishment and boy was the Librarian ticked off when that happened).

My offence: I got up and read a Christmas Story I wrote about Santa crashing his sleigh as he was flying over Transylvania and his Reindeer got rabies, turned into zombies and nobody got Christmas. The end.

Oh and on that same day I drew little Christmas Trees all over the wall in the girls bathroom- I guess I was working through writer’s block. I don’t remember.

So my Teacher (years later  it was not a sad day when I heard she was no longer among the living ) who pulled my hair when I wasn’t paying attention and checked my desk for cheat notes because I always got 100% on my spelling tests ALWAYS) not only sent me to the library where I had to listen to the Librarian bitching ( rightfully so ) that she was not a babysitter, she also made me sit in the corner of the library where all of the old history books were.

I mean those books were OLD.

So after the incident where I slaughtered the Reindeer and as my teacher said, ” Ruined Christmas for the Class” I found myself surrounded by old books.

I wasn’t supposed to leave my chair so of course I sat in it scooted it and myself across the floor to the shelf and grabbed three books.

One was about Archeology. One was about Pompeii and the third was a book about War Dogs and War Horses and how they were trained to fight in battles.

I learned about King Tut, and right then and there I decided I was going to be an explorer one day and dig up a Mummy or two myself. Seemed doable from what I read.

The pictures of Tut’s tomb  were black and white and the objects weren’t staged, so you had to really put your nose down and look for things because it was all in a jumble.

It was like going on a treasure hunt. I had a great time looking through that book and reading it.,

The War Dogs and War Horse book bothered me, I had a nagging sense those dogs and horses were never went home- I mean if a dog bit a person they got destroyed right? And here was page after page of War Dogs who probably never got to go home. They were posed with medals and were standing next to their handlers and in one I remember the Soldier staring straight into the camera with this horrible blank look on his face – I know that look now.

It’s called screaming with your eyes.

But by far the book that affected me the most was the one about Pompeii- all of those people who didn’t do the Return To Mother Earth thing- their deaths were captured and forever in those casts and it was there for you to see- their contorted limbs, the way they probably held onto each other until they couldn’t- when they had to let go when they were fighting to breathe. It was awful. They didn’t even have a little comfort in feeling their friends or loved, or just somebody  touch as they died.

I had sat with people as they passed as a child. I know how important that is.

And then I came to the picture of the Pompeii Dog.

He was twisting and turning until the very end. And he was alone. Not understanding what was going on, not knowing where his family was. Maybe he thought they’d be back for him when it was all over. Maybe he wanted to find them, maybe he just wanted to run from the horrible burning world he was now trapped in and wasn’t thinking about them at all.

But he couldn’t

I leaned over that page and cried for a long dead dog.

It didn’t seem fair. That poor dog who died alone and confused. Nothing in the world should ever have to feel that kind of pain or loneliness.

I looked up and when I was sure nobody was looking I tore that page out of the book.

And when I got home I put it in a shoebox and buried it next to one of my cats.

It seemed like the right thing to do.

It was around that time I became a writer – I won contests, awards, I was mentored by teachers and encouraged by my family.

But even when I think about how lucky I am to have the support of my family in this strange hobby ( writing ) of mine- even when I went to work in a Funeral Home and faced with a roomful of the deceased in various stages of Prep I didn’t bat an eye. I knew it was where I was supposed to be and I had that strength to face it because of my family.

But the Pompeii Dog has been with me all of these years too.

I don’t think things would have been the same without him.

That Hoodoo That I Do

Obstacle Course
Think about what you wanted to accomplish last week. Did you? What are the things that hold you back from doing everything you’d like to do?

Last week I was determined, committed , deadly serious about returning to my writing. Actually it’s been a few more weeks then that but the point is I started posting something on my blog every single day and working on stories for Halloween and some new short stories.

I haven’t been able to do this for awhile, so I started this project called Blogging 101 at WordPress and I’ve been living and breathing what am I going to write about today.

So to keep myself focused ( that’s my way of saying goofing off and  not concentrating) I hung two of my voodoo dolls where I can see them when I write.

Ok. I’m not relying on Voodoo to keep me writing.

And I don’t stick pins in these dolls ( one is actually to scare away bad spirits and the other is to attract good ones)

But when my mind wanders and I feel the urge to play on facebook or channel surf or otherwise get distracted  I look up at them…

and sometimes I would swear they maybe moved a little…or maybe not and I’m pretty sure I was the one who moved them around a bit, maybe when I was dusting (its been so hot and the air here in Terrace is sort of ick right now )

on the other hand.

No sense in taking chances.

No reason to let them think that I am the one who is bringing the bad Mojo into our space.

And I go straight back to writing.
