It’s Boom Day Y’all

Sure, yes, right.

Today it’s all about Freedoms and Flags and forcing that tear out of the corner of your eye when you stand on a corner at a 4th of July parade and little girls dressed up like Betsy Ross ride by on a float waving little flags on sticks.

But the reality is, it’s Boom Day Y’all.

It’s all about things that go zip and pop and kaboom and barbequed burgers and side dishes drenched in mayonnaise and bottles of beer  chillng in a kiddie pool with a watermelon and shooting off the last of your fireworks at three in the morning.

As a side note, in the midst of your revelries try not blow off your fingers with your customized fireworks , or shoot a bottle rocket into your neighbor’s eye or hump your gun and up sending a bullet into your own house and leaving a hole in your tv.

Really though, have fun- why not? Just try not to maim anyone or set anything on fire. Boom Day falls on a Saturday so you can have loads of fun and not just a little if you play your cards right.

I’m going to end off here with some videos that I believe both express and add some much needed tone to the day, because for as silly as I think the 4th is, I do love to roast marshmallows with my feet up and sip on Sangria under the starlight.

Song Lyric Sunday: Measured with a Thermometer

“Dance Around In Your Bones” was one of those songs that I grew up singing- my grandparents probably taught it to me and it probably appealed to me because I was an imaginative little kid with a dark streak running through my imagination a mile wide.

All I can tell you about the history of the song is that the songwriters have an impressive body of work and you’ve probably heard more of their music then you realize.

So what is it about this song that caught my fancy over 50 years ago?

I would have to say that what appealed to me was the idea of dancing skeletons and ice cream cones and peeling of your skin to boot.

Still, I wondered then and I wonder now what exactly the writers were thinking when they created this little gem- but I don’t mind if I never find out.

Sometimes the fun is in the wondering, don’t you think?

what can go wrong?

From the feeling this song puts out- just about everything because it’s all about falling in love with someone that you know isn’t good for you.

That aside, a several of my friends named their daughters ” Ramona ” after this song which is interesting because my Mom said people in her day were naming their daughters after Debbie Reynolds and Elizabeth Taylor.

To me, that’s an odd choice because Ramona, Elizabeth and Debbie all had issues and personally I wouldn’t have named my daughter after any of them.

At any rate Johnny gets a shout out here in the lyrics and it’s in keeping with Jim Adam’s Song Lyric Sunday prompt where we were inspired to explore songs with the names ” John and Jack ” in the works.

I hope you like my choice.

The Wolf

For Mindlovemisery’s Menagerie Music Challenge prompt, we were given the Bill Withers song, “Just the Two of Us.” and the suggestion to let this song and castles and rainbows and flowers be our inspiration.

It would be easy to find a love song about two people ‘chasing rainbows in the sky’ because I know them a bunch of them and I’m crazy about them.

But sometimes inspiration takes on a life of it’s own.

I was inspired to go waaaayyy outside the box and I chose ” Little Red Riding Hood ” and in particular a I chose Amanda Seyfried version because at the heart of it, this is a song about someone who is passionately in love with a person that they can never show their heart to and in this version you can hear it clear as a dark path on a moonlit night.

Of course, as the Wolf and the object of the Wolf’s desire are strolling through the dark and dangerous woods they never actually touch but the intimacy, the passion, the longing is there in every single word.

I find that heartbreakingly romantic.

I also wanted to include the original version by Sam The Sham so you can hear the different spin on passion- in the original version you can hear this a tease, it’s flirting, it’s two people having a little fun out there in the woods.

It isn’t any less passionate though.

So I hope you enjoy my post today and I hope you enjoy the song I’ve selected.
