WP Daily Prompt Asks: Do you have a quote you live your life by or think of often?
That voice in my head- the one that I hear when I ask myself WHY-why did this awful thing happen, why is the world such a dark and twisted place, why are dogs so cute and are ghosts real? And why do I want to be a writer when I have failed at almost everything I have set out to do?
WHY WHY WHY
and then I hear this voice and it says:
This highway leads to the shadowy tip of reality: you’re on a through route to the land of the different, the bizarre, the unexplainable…Go as far as you like on this road. Its limits are only those of mind itself. Ladies and Gentlemen, you’re entering the wondrous dimension of imagination. . . Next stop The Twilight Zone
Rod Serling
I keep connected to the world around me when I don’t have any reason to.
I keep writing even though I really really do suck at it- like my nearest and dearest have said- lots of people write but not all of them are good writers and I shouldn’t expect to be better then anyone else.
And most of the time I think they are right.
WHY than do I carry on?
Because these are adventures, that’s why and I want to see where it goes.
That’s what that voice in my head encourages me to do and it hasn’t let me down yet.
I have read a few articles about people who want to continue to work from home and they have made interesting points.
They’ve put forward reasons for working from home like:
it’s better for the environment because there are less cars on the road. They have more time with their families, they don’t have to waste money on expensive work clothes and they don’t have to deal with workplace drama. It’s obvious- the old school work environment was a trap and a prison and boomers are just to stupid to pull themselves out of it. But times have changed so keep up!
I have a hard time wrapping my arms around some of the points because they come across as flippant.
The reality is, giving up two trips a day in your car when you now have time to ‘run errands ‘ isn’t really doing much to help the environment and it certainly doesn’t do much to reduce the number of cars on the road.
Maybe some people do spend time with their families when they are working from home and in some cases I know it does ease the burden on daycare costs but I doubt if anyone is going back to the days when Ma and Pa sat in front of the hearth in rocking chairs and their children sat around their feet reading books and playing with their toys. So what does the modern version of family time look like? Everyone sitting in the same room all day and staring into their phones and laptops? That doesn’t sound like quality time to me. That’s sounds like how I spend my time when my train is slow or I’m stuck at the airport.
As far as workplace drama- yeah, that’s moved from the Office to social media so I’m not sure why that even comes up.
As far as the cost of your clothes- come on. I think it actually comes down to being able to wear what you want, which is something you can’t do in a workplace environment. Like it or not there is always a ‘uniform ‘ of sorts. In case you’ve lost sight of the fact- pajamas and ‘comfortable clothes ‘ are a uniform too.
Snark and quips aside, I would argue that it IS possible to go out into the world where your workplace is. People do it everyday. They manage the transportation, the costs, they use their social skills ( to various degrees of success ) to deal with their co-workers, their clients and their customers.
Arguing that ‘the world has changed’ isn’t really an excuse for insisting your company allow you to work from home. The world has not changed. It’s changed for some of us and as for the rest of us it’s moving along the way it always has.
I’d rather be part of the world- for all of it’s problems then to just Zoom in now and again.
I asked Google Arts and Culture to show me ” Nothing “
It did as I asked and it showed me ” Nothing “
I now have these images of ” Nothing ” stuck in my mind and today I have learned that ‘ nothing ‘ isn’t a place, it isn’t a state of mind. It’s an idea waiting for someone to pick it up and give it color and form and a life.
WordPress’ Daily Prompt asks: How do you unwind after a demanding day?
Well nameless WP prompter, I watched horror films- like this one:
I watched an absolutely fantastic horror movie about three women who are paranormal investigators in a film called Phenomena ( Fenómenas)
Phenomena Original title: Fenómenas 2023 1h 34m Horror Three middle-aged women who investigate paranormal events are put to the test when their leader Father Pilón disappears. Inspired by the real Hepta Group. Director Carlos Therón Writers Marta Buchaca Fernando Navarro Stars Belén Rueda Ivan Massagué Miren Ibargure
I was hooked by this film the second I met the characters.
They were tough, they are ‘middle aged’ and because they are not wafer thin millennials playing the roles of women in the 50’s, our heroines have to rely on their wits and determination to overcome the physical obstacles that the Demon they are fighting throws at them.
It makes their moments of victory much sweeter.
The scare scenes sort of crept up on you and unlike some films, you don’t find yourself looking away, you find yourself scanning every inch of the screen looking for the monsters- which was fun. It was like wandering through a haunted house.
I am one of those people who scuttle quietly through even the most intense Halloween Haunted Houses and abandoned buildings because I’m afraid I’ll miss something. No kidding that is what I do. So sure, I enjoyed the pacing in this film.
My favorite running joke was that Gloria keeps losing her hand sized crystal ball and you would think a psychic wouldn’t have that kind of problem. So on one hand you might start to think she’s a fake but her actions actually foreshadow her ultimate struggle that will hold her back unless she confronts it.
I thought that was clever story telling.
I don’t want to give anymore away.
I loved the film, I recommend the film and I think you should watch it
HOWEVER
If you watch it with English dubbed in, it’s going to kill the film for you.
One of the voice over actresses is doing her impression of what an older woman sounds like and what you will hear is a very younger voice doing an older voice that would best suit a cartoon Grandma from an episode of Scooby Doo who is supposed to be about 100 years old.
Watch this film with subtitles if you can. If you don’t want to, I think there’s a chance that the poor dubbing will spoil the story.
I thought the dubbing was so bad that I switched the option from English back to Spanish ( and no, I don’t speak Spanish ) and ran the subtitles and for REAL it changed the tone of the entire film.
So if you have Netflix and want to try unwinding the A.M. Moscoso way, check outPhenomena
