A Mother’s Love

Just a short time ago

I was at an exhibit called ” Bodies In Motion.”

I ran into a woman I ride the train with there  and we walked around for awhile and took in the exhibits.

Then we came across this one and my train companion became visibly upset. Sweat popped out all over her face and she turned absolutely pale.

” I’ve had babies, I can’t look at this. I can’t be here. They never had a chance. I can’t be here.”

She meant it, she left the exhibit and nearly walked into a huge display case on her way out of the room.

Recently this woman and I were on the train together and the subject of the immigrant children who had died at Trump’s detention center came up.

” It’s not his fault. It’s their parent’s fault they’re dead. You should  blame them, not him.”

I thought about those fetuses that had visibly upset her , that had moved her to tears because they ‘never had a chance’.

Sometimes I see her at the train station, but I never meet her eye and I never say hello.

I just can’t.

Can You See It?

I learned something new today.

I learned, from one of people I ride the train with, what it’s like to be fitted with prosthetic  eyes.

The man had his eyes removed when he was young.

First thing I learned, they didn’t remove  his entire eye, in fact  there are a few ways this is done, in his case they just removed the front part- to be honest I’m not sure what that looks like and I didn’t want to stop him to ask.

When they created the mold for his glass eyes, he said he could feel them put whatever it is they used ( I think he said they used some kind of wax, could be wrong ) into his sockets. He said it didn’t hurt, but it felt weird.

I’ve been turning this conversation over in my head because people were actually asking him good questions- and he was great at telling us little stories in reply.

Plus, when he talked he actually painted images you could see which I found the most interesting part of this experience.

I’m not wondering what an empty eye socket looks like, or what it would feel like to have someone put their hands into the space where my eyes used to be to create a mold-

As a writer, I was fascinated by the idea that a man who is blind could paint pictures with words.

Amazing.

Yesterday

I was out walking my dog and one of my neighbors stopped to ask me a question.

He was

wearing his gun.

He can wear it all day long – wherever he wants and nobody will hassle him or ask him WHY he is wearing his gun, not even the police

because

it’s legal.

Plus he’s white.
