A Wedding Story

I should have been braver, I should have told the truth

on my wedding day.

When I got married I should have worn black,

I should have held my wedding at midnight and served

blood red wine to all of my guests

instead of light and bubbly champagne.

To top off this traditional day straight from  a bridal magazine

I got my hair and nails done, I wore a

pretty ivory dress , I smiled a lot. I smiled until my face hurt.

And then just before we said our vows

a woman driving by the Church had a seizure and crashed her car

into a telephone pole in the Church’s parking lot.

There were police cars and an ambulance, a firetruck and they

were all wailing like wounded beasts.

To this day I think to myself,

someone was telling me I should have told the truth

about who I was on my wedding day instead of spinning a tale

that was nothing close to the truth

in a Church of all places, on my wedding day.

The Thing About People

I like being  around people who enjoy telling stories about their dogs and cats and the funny things that happened to them two hours or twenty years ago.

I like being around people who read from actual books when they’re riding the train or the bus or flying on an airplane or sitting on a park bench.

I like people who can cook or can’t cook and the interesting stories they share about the most imperfect meal they ever ate. I like it most of all when they don’t whip out their camera and show me a picture of that sorry, yet entertaining,  old meal.

Above it all, I like being around people who know how and when it is time to say

‘good bye’.
