In a few days it will be socially acceptable to tear your heart out of your chest and give it to someone you love.
So glad I didn’t miss out on that!

My perfect day from beginning to the end
would be full of thunderstorms.
There wouldn’t be a clock or calender hanging from the walls
if my home, which on a perfect day in a perfect day
would have an attic full of lively ghosts
and a cemetery full of sleeping ghosts in the back yard.
If my day was perfect I would have read
a stack of books and listened to hours of music
by the time the sunset
and on a perfect day from the beginning to the end
I wouldn’t have given a single moment of thought to what happened
yesterday or what might happen tomarrow.
When I was little I had an imaginary friend named Maple Greenlake.
Maple was always a good girl, I insisted.
She made her bed in the morning, she remembered to use her table manners not just at home but at school to. She used her skipping rope for skipping only and she never drew or wrote on the walls in our semi-finished attic I would tell my Mom.
Maple wasn’t the one who played silly tricks on my brother or my Grandma when she came over to play I would say to my Dad.
She would never do things like set fire under the apple tree in the backyard.
” So who does all of these naughty things? ” my Mom would ask when the cookies disappeared from the cookie jar before dinner, or all of the forks and glasses disappeared from the kitchen cupboard and ended up in the bathtub.
” I did ” I would insist, ” Maple isn’t a naughty girl. Ask her yourself. ” I told my parents on more then one occasion.
” Go on ask. She is standing right there behind you.”
My Mom would put her hand up to the back of her neck, sometimes my Dad would start to say something but didn’t.
But my parents never turned around to ask Maple if what I said was true.
I wonder why.

On my commute to work
( I take the train )
I was bored.
I didn’t want to play word games on my phone
I didn’t want to read my book or eat a snack or look out the window
and watch the grotty landscape whiz by.
Instead, I checked out my fellow commuters:
I noted what they wore, if they were asleep or awake
if they were on their phones or drinking coffee or picking their nose
( there’s always a few of them)
There weren’t a lot of people on the train so my little game of ‘look over here’ ended
quickly.
Bored and left with nothing to do, the thoughts sort of creeped into my head.
How many of my fellow commuters thought about taking an ax to someone they hated,
how many of them wished that their neighbor who left their garbage cans on the curb
three days after pickup would just die
how may of them were thinking about death and decay at this exact moment?
On this boring train that number was zero. I was sure of it.
Oh. But that’s not true- I told myself. One person was thinking those dark thoughts.
One for sure and she blended into that Sea of faceless commuters staring out the
window or into their hands and playing with their phones or pretending to sleep.
One. For sure.
