Mourning Blooms

When I think of mourning colors, I don’t think of the color black.

When I think of  a mourning colors,  I think of the color that appears when life has left it’s warm and comfortable home, when daylight is dying in the sky above our heads ( even if we can’t see it ) when I think of mourning colors, I think of the many, many shades of lilac.

Joseph Farquharson: ‘A Winter Garden’

I’ve seen shades of lilac on the faces of people I knew who were leaving this world, I’ve seen it in icy landscapes. I’ve seen it in flower vases at funerals and at graveside.

Lilac is always there when death appears and nobody sings about it, or writes poems about it or drapes it on their body when they want to look intimidating and powerful.

Lilac is Death’s quiet companion.
