It’s Kooky Alright

CHARLES ADDAMS

I wasn’t sure how I felt about another Addams Family reboot- but to be fair ALL of the film and the  tv version of The Addams Family have been reboots because they all were interpretations of the comics.

With that being said, I’ve always felt that the tv show and the movies were great and I loved them but they never quite embraced the truly macabre nature of the ink version- until now.

So I am going to watch ” Wednesday ” and I’m willing to bet I’m going to love it

to death.

There are 75 days left to Halloween- and I’m feeling a little creepy and kooky and all together ooky.

The Perfect Show For A Perfect Halloween Weekend

I could NOT be more excited about a tv show then I am about this one!

Paranormal debuted on Netflix last year on my birthday and what can I say, it would have been an awesome gift from the Universe but as a rule my birthday sucks so I don’t celebrate it. In fact I don’t do much of anything so that’s probably why I missed this.

Paranormal is based on a series of books by  Khaled Tawfik who wrote more than 200 books, in both Egyptian Arabic and Classical Arabic. He was the first contemporary writer of horror and science fiction in the Arabic speaking world and also the first writer to explore the medical thriller genre.

After seeing all six episodes of Paranormal- which I shamelessly binged  on I was ready to read Tawfik’s books but was very disappointed to find out NONE of them have been translated into English.

Seriously, someone needs to get on that because…

Paranormal is a total gem and Khaled Tawfik’s works are probably gems too.

Right off the bat I loved the hero, I loved the scary monsters and the characters that surround Refaat- flawed and stubborn as they were and I have to admit I spent some time wishing they’d meet an untimely end. The thing is,  I still liked them.

I also loved the way you could not see what was coming and there is a reason for that.

Our spectacular hero  Refaat Ismail is a man who is grounded in science and reasoning. When he is faced with the Paranormal he breaks what he sees down by it’s elements and as you follow him, he makes perfect  sense. Even if the monster or demon or ghost is right there on your tv screen and you are LOOKING at it you go along with Refaat because, he has made the case for why you are not seeing what you THINK you are seeing. Plus he’s an imperfect character that most of us can relate too and you end up joining team Refaat when the story first opens.

I guess I latched onto  Refaat Ismail because he sort of reminded me of Carl Kolchak and I’ve always been partial to Kolchak.

Oh. And there are at least two great comical moments which surprised me because the last time I laughed at a horror film was at the Blair Witch Project when the guys were singing the theme song from Gilligan’s Island.

I refuse to give you one teeny spoiler because if you want to watch something over the Halloween weekend then this is the show for you.

There is one common thread that runs from story to story, but each episode is a great stand alone story too.

So go on. Scoot. Set a reminder. Watch Paranormal. You will not be disappointed.

55 Days To Halloween

There are 55 days to  Halloween and it’s getting to be about that time when Halloween People like to recommend Halloween movies and TV shows.

There really are never any big surprises for me on those lists. Besides when you spend you entire year writing about monsters the magic is sort of gone.

However I did run across some shows that would make for some fun Halloween watching, not only because they are well told stories of suspense and the supernatural but most important they are creative AND they will get under your skin.

Up first:

As good as the X-Files and best of all, the  Eerie Indiana are stories are rooted in familiar settings. I like that route. NO SAFETY NET FOR YOU!

Next up- The Truth Seekers.

I fell in love with this show because

A: it’s a horror comedy

and B: it doesn’t take everyday people and put them into extraordinary  circumstances. It takes the Supernatural and plunges it head first into the toilet bowl of ‘ the normal ‘ and then it flushes it over and over. It’s like a swirly on steroids with AWESOME special effects.

There was a major twist at the end of one of the stories and after I got done laughing I am not to proud to say I slept with the nightlight on.

So of course this is my favorite tv show,  I’ve read that Amazon hasn’t ‘officially”  canceled it it a but they haven’t renewed it yet because they’re idiots.

Over the years I’ve had several favorite horror movies- but the one that really pulled me in and scared me silly was The Witch– especially because I knew Black Phillip was the Devil and that the entire family was in for a Hell of a time.

It wasn’t rocket science to figure this out. It was in all the promos.

I also enjoyed the merciless pace of the story telling- it marched you straight to the end and that ending was

Delicious.

So there are my Halloween movie/tv recommendations.

Trick or Treat- you decide.
