I have cracked open a lot of eggs in my time but I have never cracked one open and had two yolks plop out.
I know that there are lots of stories about double yolkers that involve death, fertility and big hens but that aside it is pretty cool to have something out of the ordinary turn up in your kitchen while you’re waiting for you toast to pop up.
I bought some free range organic eggs recently, and out of the dozen only three were single yolks, amazing!
I’ve heard that hens with underdeveloped reproductive systems can produce ‘double yolkers” and that there is a breed of hen that produces them too. Still. It is pretty cool to pop an egg open and see that!
Yes, it feels like you’ve had a win too.
I hadn’t heard that about underdeveloped. over here they talk about hight fertility, but that is just anecdotal farm talk, perhaps wishful thinking.
I did some quick research online and thought this article was good: https://www.mypetchicken.com/backyard-chickens/chicken-help/What-breed-of-chicken-lays-double-yolked-eggs-H189.aspx
Thank you for taking time to do that, I never knew that, and I had chooks on the farm years ago, we would often muse about it, but the article lays 🙂 to rest the origins.
