( Sort of Spoilers )

Today instead of recommending a book I thought I’d recommend a movie instead.

Over the weekend I watched a few suspense/ supernatural movies and I found a couple of gems so I thought I’d share some thoughts on them- and why I would recommend watching them.

Today I want to tell you about a movie I saw on Amazon Prime called

Face your Fears | Thriller shorts for Adults.

This is not a horror film. I mean the behavior of some of the characters experience is very horrific and their circumstances are horrifying too.  But the monsters in this movie are not so easy to spot because they look like ‘us’.

Most people don’t like that format. They want to see the monster. They want to name it and kill it or they want to make friends with it and start Facebook fanpages for them.

This movie doesn’t do that.

I will say that the first installment  called ” Highway ” was very clever- it’s a story about death. You are not sure whose death, but that’s my takeaway from it.

It would be easy to say that the girl we first meet is running from something, but it’s short sighted to think she’s running away. Maybe it’s not as simple of an ending as we think.

 

The second story called ” Aftermath”  creeped me out because you’re watching this world where people are doing some horrible things to stay alive- and from character to character you see fear and desperation  in their faces and when the characters act in concert they move  very much in the same way you might see reptiles or insects stripping down and devouring their prey.

In the end the one person who has shown glimmers of emotion and humanity- he unlike the other characters- smiles ( sort of ) at the end.

The third story called ”  The Last Time I Saw Richard ” makes no bones about what is going on. This is a story about madness and being that you’re seeing the world through the eyes of someone who has issues with reality for some reason we just go along for the ride and we use him to set up the guardrails for us.

I will say this. We end up being like the girl in the horror movies who follows the blood trail. Why oh why do we do it? On the other hand, I do like getting pulled into a story so I’m fine with that in this case.

I liked the monsters- by that I mean the design and the way they were used in the story. What I found interesting was that the character who we are following has these conversations with his Doctor, but we never see the Doctor’s face.  What does that mean? I think it means not to trust what you are seeing.  I like that in  story.

“Angel Road” pulled me in and was hands down  my favorite because of one straight up terrifying moment at the beginning of the movie.

In this story one of the Characters is a rough around the edges drifter that you just know isn’t a great guy and he decides to help a pretty girl stranded at the side of the road ( uh-oh).

The drifter goes to her trunk to look for tools and water and sees a gun. At this point you know both of these people are dangerous but you’re just not sure who has the upper hand. It’s a draw at that point.

Shortly  after he sees the gun,  the Drifter holds up a roll  duct tape and tells her that it must be her lucky day and I’m thinking if I ran into either one of those two on a streatch of deserted road, I’d run for my life.

That’s not what happens though- nobody runs away.

These two people go on a journey together and unlike the other stories where the characters become victims of their fears, at the end of this story we see the girl and the drifter at walking towards a horizon- you might think it’s dusk or maybe it’s really early in the morning and there might be monsters but they’re not afraid and I thought that was a nice touch.

So why was this story my favorite? Because in this story the monster was desperation and when it showed it’s face from scene to scene on the faces of the characters, I got the chills.

And in my Autumn reading and movie watching, that’s exactly what I’m looking for.
