Halloween Journal #3

My earliest Halloween memories.

I remember carving my first pumpkin with my Grandpa, I remember the smell of pumpkin and the squooshy sound the pumpkin made when he plunged his knife into it.

I remember he was smiling.

My Grandpa was found of candy, his favorite were  Sugar Babies and I remember along with the smell of pumpkin I could smell his Sugar Babies.

I remember the box of candy next to my arm and I remember shaking the bits of candy out into my hand.

I held the candy in my hand for a few minutes, then I squeezed my hand shut tight for a few minutes and when I opened it my Sugar Babies were softer and had melted.

My Grandpa watched me and he asked me, ” Why do you torture you Sugar Babies like that before  you eat them? ”

I thought for a minute and then I asked, ” how come all your pumpkins have screaming faces? ”

He looked into his pumpkin’s face and I looked into my sticky  hand and then he went back to carving his pumpkin and I sat next to him squishing Sugar Barbies to death.
