I looked through these little windows and not only did I see Victoria, I heard it too.
FROM “THE FAIRIES” BY WILLIAM ALLINGHAM (1824–89)
They stole little Bridget
For seven years long;
When she came down again
Her friends were all gone.
They took her lightly back,
Between the night and morrow,
They thought that she was fast asleep,
But she was dead with sorrow.
They have kept her ever since
Deep within the lake,
On a bed of flag-leaves,
Watching till she wake.
I knew someone in undergrad who did a dissertation on coffin and other funeral pictures in Wisconsin this pretty much what all the illustrations in his thesis looked like.
Have you heard of this book? It’s excellent. I really enjoyed it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wisconsin_Death_Trip
