The littlest scarecrow
stands alone
in a garden of stone;
golden leaves fall to the earth around him
slowly, one by one,
like tears that will forever fall from a mother’s searching eyes
and a father’s still and broken heart.
What an unexpected sight at graveside.
I took that picture in 1998 ( about ) . Someone had been leaving little toys there during the holidays since 1961.
