The Sloan House

My Summerween Writing Challenge: MONSTER

Emilia Sloan built a house in a field where every single plant, blade of grass or tree died just as soon as  the seed it was housed in sprouted and it’s first green shoots  made it’s way up out of the Earth.

I don’t know what it was  that patch of Earth that called out to  herm what it could have said that could have possibly convince  here to live there but she bought it, she designed the house herself and she brought in workers to build it.  She even built a fence around the property- it was strung with barbedwire and animal skulls hung from the posts.

Emilia’s house on this dead piece of land  was simple, one stair case connected their first floor to the second floor and  the stairs to the basement weren’t made of wood, they were made of brick. The walls were covered with light green wall paper and the furniture,  the unmade beds, the chest of drawers including the kitchen table were covered with heavy white sheets.

Emilia’s looked like it was full of ghosts,  every room looked haunted  that’s what I heard from the workers who lived in town.

I never heard much more about her house  then beyond  those few descriptions because after the house was finished and furnished the workers and their families moved out of town – they didn’t even bother to properly pack up their belongings. One by one they woke up one day and simply threw all of their things, their furniture, their clothes, pictures and paintings and their children’s toys into their trucks and cars and they drove out of town without as much as a good bye, even to neighbors they had known for most of their lives.

Sometimes I saw Emilia standing on her front porch, sometimes she was at the end of the driveway near the mailbox with blue birds stenciled on it’s side and when she waved at me and invited me to leave the road and follow her into her house, I never took her up on her invitation.

That house on that dead plot of land is waiting for ghosts to move in, maybe even a monster or two and I don’t want to be among the first to call Emilia Sloan’s house my final home.
