I had to leave for another road trip for work right after the election. I was leaving the comfort, familiarity, and safety of my home to go south, in what has become very deep dark red territory. For the first time, I wasn’t looking forward to being in a new place. The promise of travel held no hope or joy for me. I ordered in, and stayed in my hotel all night. I need to figure out what kind of country I now find myself in before I can feel completely at ease again.
It’s frightening. I remember when Brexit happened the number of hate crimes in the UK also jumped, as if one event justified the other. it’s scary to think people can see the US as a safe haven for hate or racism. I’ll keep my family and friends close, as many will feel particularly targeted.
