Next Stop- The Uncanny Valley

For it’s own special reasons, FB blacked this picture out and you have to click the magic eye to say you understand that it contains graphic content.

Be warned.

Turn back now.

Here there be tygres.

Here is the picture that could send you screaming into the long dark night_

I get it. But not for the reason you might be thinking. But first let’s take a quick look at FB’s ‘community standards’ concerning this issue.

According to FB they will give the warning screen that you have to click in order to view the image if the picture contains-

Videos of people or dead bodies in a medical setting if they depict:

  • Dismemberment.
  • Visible internal organs; partially decomposed bodies.
  • Charred or burning people, including cremation or self-immolation when that action is a form of political speech or newsworthy.
  • Victims of cannibalism.
  • Throat-slitting.

Photos of wounded or dead people if they show:

  • Dismemberment.
  • Visible internal organs; partially decomposed bodies.
  • Charred or burning people.
  • Victims of cannibalism.
  • Throat-slitting.

Imagery that shows the violent death of a person or people by accident or murder

Imagery that shows capital punishment of a person

Imagery that shows acts of torture committed against a person or people

Imagery of non-medical foreign objects (such as metal objects, knives, nails) involuntarily inserted or stuck into people causing grievous injury

Somebody somewhere flagged this  picture as being graphic in that it shows ( in a medical setting ) victims of cannibalism. Visible internal organs; partially decomposed bodies. This photo may have been flagged because it showed charred or burning bodies and people being executed. Someone else may have seen  images f non-medical foreign objects (such as metal objects, knives, nails) involuntarily inserted or stuck into people causing grievous injury

I  know that some people are so disturbed by AI artwork and anything that even remotely resembles it ( as I think this picture does),  that they refuse to view it or post it.

So maybe that’s how this got the warning screen.

With that I am wondering if a lot of people are finding themselves not taking that next stop on the road ahead that leads to the Twilight Zone, but  driving along an unfamiliar road on a foggy night and have found themselves on the outskirts of  the Uncanny Valley.

In case you ar not familiar with the concept- here is the definition of  “The Uncanny Valley

  1. a psychological concept that describes the feelings of unease or revulsion that people tend to have toward artificial representations of human beings, as robots or computer animations, that closely imitate many but not all the features and behaviors of actual human beings.
  2. the dip in positive feelings toward such artificial representations.

FB has these nebulous and somewhat rickety  ideas about ” community standards’ that they trot out at the oddest times. I have to wonder though, if you stare at this picture long enough do you see those images? And  is that anyone’s business except your own?
